How to Customize a Battery Pack for Your Product

Custom Battery Engineering Guide

Custom battery development begins with the device and its operating conditions. This guide explains how to turn application requirements into a controlled battery specification for prototype evaluation and production approval.

Table of Contents

1. Define the Application Requirements

Describe the device, usage cycle, operating environment, load profile, installation space and charging arrangement. These constraints determine the engineering route.

2. Set Voltage, Capacity and Current Targets

Specify nominal voltage, runtime expectation, continuous current and peak current. Capacity should be considered with current demand and the available volume.

3. Select Cells and Series/Parallel Configuration

Choose an appropriate cell format and set the series/parallel structure from the electrical requirement and enclosure. Refer to the technical selection guide for the decision framework.

4. Define BMS, PCM and NTC Requirements

Confirm the necessary protection functions and whether temperature sensing is required by the charger, device or application. Do not assume every pack needs the same protection configuration.

5. Confirm Dimensions and Mechanical Integration

Provide the maximum dimensions, mounting method, clearance, label location and cable exit direction. A pack should be evaluated inside the real product envelope.

6. Specify Wiring and Connectors

Define connector model, pinout, polarity, wire length, gauge, routing and strain-relief needs. A drawing or clear connector photo reduces avoidable integration errors.

7. Build a Prototype for Device-Level Validation

Prototype evaluation should check fit, polarity, runtime, charging behavior and the device under representative operating conditions.

8. Review Testing and Final Specification Confirmation

Record the approved configuration, dimensions, wiring, label and test result before production. Any later change should be reviewed against the controlled specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information is needed to start a custom battery project?

Application, voltage, runtime, current, available space, charging method and connector details provide a practical starting point.

Can connectors and wiring be customized?

Connector, wire length and polarity can be reviewed against the project requirement and technical suitability.

When is the specification final?

After the prototype has been checked in the final device and the agreed configuration is documented for production.
